Healing and disease both begin on an unseen level
Reiki, (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system of natural healing that originated in Tibet over 2500 years ago and was later rediscovered in the 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui from Japan. Reiki is a technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. The syllable Rei means universal and Ki is the vital life force energy. In China, this energy is called Chi and in India, it is called Prana. The space around us is filled with this endless and inexhaustible energy. It is this vital energy which flows through every living thing. Reiki is this natural healing force flowing through the hands of the Reiki practitioner in a powerful and concentrated form. We are all born with this ability, but as we go through life we become less open and the flow becomes less pure and free.
How is this energy used?
The practitioner lays their hands on the client's body with the intention to heal. The act of laying-on-of hands to comfort and relieve pain is instinctual. When we injure ourselves, the first thing we usually do is to put our hands on it. A child with a skinned knee runs to mother to hold or kiss it. Human touch conveys caring and love. The animal mother will lick her young when they are in distress. Touch is a basic need for health and growth.
Is Reiki safe for everyone?
Reiki is totally positive and can never cause harm to any living thing, no matter how old, young or frail. Elders, infants, & children respond well to Reiki as do pets & plants. If any one is ill, in pain, or emotionally troubled, Reiki will help. For the person who is healthy, it relaxes and rejuvenates. For someone dying, Reiki eases the process, and assists the Spirit on its journey. For the grieving loved ones, it is a comfort and a help as well.
What is a session like?
The client is made comfortable lying down or seated, if preferred. Soothing music may be played in the background to help them relax. The practitioner uses different hand positions lightly on the body or just above it and the energy starts flowing. The energy is safe and non-invasive. It passes through clothing, plaster, bandages, etc.; there is no need to disrobe. The receiver will feel a warm, relaxing sensation. The client may enter a meditative state or fall asleep.
Sometimes repressed emotions or negative thought patterns may be brought to the client's consciousness. After the session, a few moments are spent briefly discussing what was experienced. The strength of the energy depends on the need of the client. Reiki flows in unlimited quantity and always goes to where it is needed. No personal energy is taken from the practitioner; on the contrary, both giver and receiver are strengthened and enriched with energy. A session usually lasts an hour or more. Often three consecutive sessions produce optimum results.
